He began his study of the llanera harp at an early age. In Bogota, he studied music at the Luis A. Calvo Music School, with the noted teacher and composer Samuel Bedoya, in addition to his career as a professional harpist. Besides his artistic and musical career, he received a degree in business administration at the Universidad Externado of Colombia in Bogota in 1985.
